Each cardholder under the age of 21 who wishes to sail must take the Small Boat Swim Test at the “Z” Center Pool. This test consists of swimming 100 yards (four lengths of the pool) and treading water for 5 minutes. The lifeguard will give you a certificate to hand in to the staff at the Sailing Pavilion. Please take your MIT ID with you, as the lifeguard on duty may ask for identification.

Anyone who wishes to obtain a sailing card will have to agree to the following statement when creating their MITNA account:

  • I am 21 years of age or older and can swim 100 meters and tread water for 5 minutes without help.
Sailing Pavilion staff may require you to present proof-of-age before issuing your sailing card.
  • I have taken and passed the MIT “Boating Test.”
You are required to bring proof of passing the test before obtaining your sailing card.
  • I am under 18 years old and, therefore, will have a parent or guardian initial the account.
The parent or guardian must be present at the Pavilion when obtaining a sailing card.
  • I will always wear a personal flotation device when aboard an MIT boat.
