Learn to windsurf at MIT on the Charles River!

Class includes:

  • Windsurfing at MIT, safety, and where to find and how to use the windsurfing equipment
  • Windsurfing rigging and derigging
  • Windsurfing demo and theory of how everything works
  • Windsurfing practice time on the water

The class will start with the rigging process and a general board-handling demo. We will try to give students as much board time on the water as possible. However, since we have limited number of beginner boards available for the class, we will take turns out on the water. You will get wet!

Steps to take before class:

  • Must see: Please review the windsurfing beginner videos. This is required as it will help you get more familiar with the basic maneuvers.
  • Be very comfortable with being in the Charles River and getting wet -you will do a lot of swimming during this class! (bring a towel) We have a hot water shower!
  • Water temperatures vary throughout the season. Early summer water will be colder than late summer or even fall. Wetsuits are optional, but we highly recommend synthetic leggings/long sleeves to prevent chills.

NOTE: This class may get postponed if wind/weather conditions are unfavorable. We may also postpone if water quality is poor, such as after a particularly large rainstorm.

There are three levels of board surfing ratings:

  1. Board Sailing Class:
Received upon completion of the Intro to Windsurfing Class. Familiar with rigging equipment correctly and some very elementary windsurfing. Tether recommended and check in with dock staff before departing dock.
  2. Board Sailing Basic:
Can setup beginner equipment properly, tack, and sail upwind in light to medium wind conditions (less than 15 knots).
  3. Board Sailing Advanced:
Can rig shaped (advanced) sails properly, and tack, jibe, and sail upwind in strong wind conditions (more than 15 knots) with harness.

Lifejackets must be worn while windsurfing.
