Description

Pre-requisites:

-Full membership (Normal Sailing Card)
-Windsurfing Basic rating

• You must have at least a Windsurfing Basic rating in order to register.  Not just the class rating.

• You must have an active normal sailing card

• You must be able to swim — no exceptions. You should be able to meet the standard MITNA swimming requirement, but do not need to present proof.

Registration:

• Registration for this class will open at Midnight (12:00:01 am) on the Wednesday prior.

• Class size is limited to 6 participants. Registering for this event does not confirm your entry into the class.

• Confirmations for class spots will be first-come, first-serve based on the pre-requisites.

We will cover the following:

• Wingfoiling at MIT, safety, and where to find wingfoiling equipment

• Wingfoiling rigging and derigging

• Wingfoiling demo and theory of how everything works

• Winging practice time (PS as a beginner you will almost definitely fall in the water)

  • Wing on windsurfer board

• Foiling instruction

• Wingfoiling practice: Wing with foil board

• The class will start with the rigging process and a general board handling demo. We will try to give students as much board time on the water as possible. However, since we have three boards available for the class, we will take turns out on the water. You will get wet!

 

Steps to take before class:

• Must see: Please review the Duotone Wingfoiling Academy videos. This is required as it will help you get more familiar with the basic winging maneuvers. Participants must have watched the SET UP and BASICS videos before coming to the lesson. 

• Be very comfortable getting wet: you will do a lot of swimming during this class! (bring a towel) We have a hot water shower!

• Water temperatures are around 70 degrees F, and air temperature will be around 70 degrees F and cloudy. Wetsuits are optional, but highly recommend synthetic leggings/long sleeves to prevent chill.

NOTE: If wind/weather conditions are not favorable, this event may get postponed.

Please leave your wallet, cellphones, and any other valuables at home. Bring only your MIT ID and items that can get wet. Do not bring purses, backpacks, laptops, or anything else that will make you unhappy if it gets wet or lost.

Safety For You (& the Equipment):

• Wear impact vest, helmet & footwear. Sunglasses and wetsuit recommended.

  • Foils can be sharp and are painful to make contact with

• When falling, try to fall upwind 

  • Do not try to save yourself when crashing as you will likely fall onto foil

Rigging

• Assemble board with foil, then remove foil covers and place covers indoors

  • Be sure board/ foil is away from dock edge and swinging booms

  • Do not lose screws! 

• Inflate wing indoors or on floating dock

  • Wooden dock is splintery and may pop inflatable equipment

• Always secure wing while at dock

• Board and foil upwind of wing

• Wing upside down

• Waist leash clipped around foil’s mast and wing handle
