Sailing - Catboat (short course) PE.0927

Students will learn to sail catboats with one partner in challenging conditions. Skills include: feathering a boat to windward in strong and gusty breezes, stepping and lowering the mast, learning basic outboard motor skills for getting boat under RR Bridge and through locks, getting away from a mooring and landing at a mooring, safely retrieve a person who falls overboard and anchor selections for types of bottom, breeze and depth. If inclement weather, classes will be held via Zoom.

Prerequisite: Prior sailing experience either with Basic PE&W Sailing or sailing outside of MIT. Q3: 2021- March 16 (remote- zoom) 18, 25, 30, April 1, 6. Participants should not be rank beginners and know how to sail close hauled, tack and gybe a small sailboat. Prior sailing experience in MIT catboats is not required. Students must have completed the swim/boat test by 2/17/2021.

Equipment: Synthetic, warm clothing recommended (hats, gloves and/or mittens), spray or water repellent pants are suggested. Note: there are no restrooms available in the Sailing Pavilion.
