Sailing - Catboat (4 week course) PE.0927
Students will learn to sail catboats with one partner in challenging conditions. Skills include: feathering a boat to windward in strong and gusty breezes, stepping and lowering the mast, learning basic outboard motor skills for getting boat under RR Bridge and through locks, getting away from a mooring and landing at a mooring, safely retrieve a person who falls overboard and anchor selections for types of bottom, breeze and depth.
Prerequisite: Must be available Oct. 26, 28, Nov. 2, 4, 9, 16 from 1p-2:30p. Prior sailing experience either with Basic PE&W Sailing or sailing outside of MIT. Participants should not be rank beginners and know how to sail close hauled, tack and gybe a small sailboat. Prior sailing experience in MIT catboats is not required. Students must have completed the swim/boat test by Oct. 13th.
Equipment: Synthetic, warm clothing recommended (hats, gloves and/or mittens), spray or water repellent pants are suggested.
